Soaking hay for horses can be a real chore. This back-breaking process takes time out of your day and uses vast quantities of water, so why do horse owners soak hay? Soaked hay is often thought to be better for your horses, as it can remove the dust, mould and bacteria that can build up in hay bales over time. However, soaking isn’t a fool-proof method and using a hay steamer for horses is a tried and tested method of improving your horse’s health and the quality of your hay.

At Chelford Farm Supplies, we stock a range of hay steamers from leading brand Haygain. Haygain steamers are easy to transport, meaning that you can use them on the yard and also transport with you when staying away at competitions. A real benefit of Haygain is that it comes in a variety of sizes. So if you only want to steam one haynet, the HG One is your model of choice and will hold up to 7kg of loose of netted hay. Looking for something a little bigger? The HG 600 will hold up to 15kg of hay loose or in a net, which works out around half a bale of hay. Need to go even bigger? The HG 2000 will allow you to steam an entire bale of hay in one go.

Choosing to use a hay steamer rather than soaking hay will save you time, and also drastically improve you water bill! Investing in a steamer for hay will improve the quality of your horse, making it more palatable and delicious for your horse, while also enhancing your horse’s respiratory health.
