Water troughs are typically made from one of three materials: polyethylene, concrete or metal. Polyethylene troughs are easy to move, clean, are UV resistant and will bounce back into shape after impact from the herd. Durable and hardwearing concrete troughs are by far the most popular option by farmers and are ideal if you would like to keep them permanently out in the field. They are, however, much harder to clean and can deteriorate over time due to the build-up of your cattle’s saliva. Metal is perfect if you would like to move the trough from one paddock to another, but should always be placed under some form of shelter as they are prone to rust.

Sheep can drink anything between 5 to 10 litres of water per day and the majority spend of their time out in the field come rain, snow or shine. For all-year access you should consider a frost-free livestock waterer such as the range from JFC Agri. Depending on how large your stock is, it’s also important to consider allowing multiple animals to be able to drink from the same trough at one same time.

If you are a dairy farmer, be prepared to go through a lot of water! Milking cows need an average of 115 litres of water per day, as water is a vital nutrient for cows and has many functions in the body. You wouldn’t dream of drinking dirty water so neither should your livestock. Investing in a stock water trough will ensure your cows get plenty of fresh water per day and help them to keep producing a high milk yield. Galvanised and concrete troughs are by far the most popular choice for dairy farmers, as these troughs do not need to be moved and can hold high volumes of water.

Weather you have chickens or ducks, all birds like to get their beaks wet and water is important for the health of your feathered friends to help them grow and lay lots of eggs. It’s best to choose a poultry drinker which is low to the ground and has multiple access points to allow serval birds to drink at once. Our range of drinkers with legs have been designed to stop water being wasted and dampening bedding or creating puddles on the floor.

We’re proud to be a leading UK stockist of water troughs & drinkers for leading brands including IAE, Kerbl, JFC and Paxton. If you would like any more information regarding our products, please call our expert team in the Farm Shop on 01625 861588 or visit us in-store at our Cheshire Farm Shop.
